As a biological concept, an animal, or human is a person who has developed. Within the human realm, adult is a reference to the social and legal aspects. As opposed to someone who is not considered to be an adult or "minor", the legal adult is a person who has reached the age of majority which makes them independent as well as responsible and competent. Also, they can be described as an "major". The age when a child becomes an adult legally is 18; however, the definition of legal maturity may differ based upon the nation or legal system in place, and also their psychological state.

If a person attains full intellectual and physical maturity, this is known as adulthood. Adulthood usually begins with 21, which is the average age for adults. Middle age, commencing approximately 40 years of age then follows by an ageing process that can last up to 60 years. Early adulthood begins between the ages of 18 to 30. The middle age stage begins from between the mid-30s and 60s. Later adulthood is when we reach the middle of 60s. In the early years of adulthood the body is at its physical maturity to the maximum. However, our body's size and weight could grow. In the early years of adulthood, we are physically at our peak. Strength of muscles, reaction time, sensory ability, and cardiac function all reach their maximum.
